Week 3 Blog
In today’s 21st-century classroom, it requires more than just teaching to the standards; you must understand and meet the needs cognitively, emotionally, and developmentally for success.
The three factors that are major points to impact curriculum are building on prior knowledge, assessing age and development, and enhancing motivation and goal setting. Teaching at a Title 1 School that takes in feeder school students as freshmen it is important to first identify students' incoming academic levels in order to better adapt and adjust content to meet their needs.
Although I mainly have freshmen taking physical science, I do have higher-level students who need to take the class as a graduation requirement. Students' maturity is not at the same level as the majority of students, and although they must still do work, the way in which I interact with them is adjusted to promote better relationships for learning. I think motivation may be the most critical. When students are personally interested, they are more likely to excel in challenges and take pride in their goal to succeed.
These ideas relate to what Gura said, that creative learning is a necessary change in today's classrooms. The constant use of digital devices calls for lessons to be creative in capturing and sparking today’s students. In Gura’s article, he said “that teachers should make creativity a main goal and help students develop it throughout their school years” (Gura, 2017. P .7). Also, Rivero discussed in his article the importance of creating memorable learning through an emotional connection. He said, “with modern production tools and communication channels, making and sharing what you make is a way to drip some drops of creativity into the ocean of an audience and, if it’s catchy enough, watch it spread rapidly and turn it all bright blue” (Rivero. 2020. P. 7). Both of these articles tied together the importance of authentic learning being creative and interesting enough to motivate students learning.
Lessons that engage students through connecting what to prior knowledge and encourage teachers to grow professionally supports the ISTE Standard for Educators as Learners subsection (b). As educators continue to share ideas and improve on their teaching practices we can continue to grow and improve our methods of teaching. In conclusion, be thoughtful, purposeful when creating content and be creative!

I think it is absolutely crucial that educators are able to tie standards together. You're infographic is wonderful and clearly laid out. Good job on your references, I don't know if I did mine correctly but I guess we're going to find out. Nice quote from Rivero in your script as well.

Jessica,
ReplyDeleteYour opening sentence says it all. Teachers who can meet the cognitive, emotional, and developmental needs of their students are setting them up for success and excellence in the classroom. If teachers do not adopt this approach, a significant achievement gap will likely develop, which could have a lasting impact on students and be detrimental to them.
As educators, we must understand where our students are and what they need in order to help them succeed. I enjoyed your post; thank you!
Jessica, as you said in your blog, you mentioned that as educators we should understand the cognitive, emotional, and physical development of each stage of the students. You said correctly, the motivation is the key to students' success. If students are willing to study one of the subjects, they can do even better than we expected. You also mentioned that as educators, we should practice, grow, and improve our teaching methods, which can make our teaching more effective.
